Sweden - An Absolut Drink, Creates Absolut Drama

We have a new Blog about Scandinavia and our insider's view with our custom travel and tours. Please continue to follow our blog posting on our new blog Insider's Scandinavia - Great Places to Go and Things to do!

Absolut vodka pulled its controversial ad from its Mexican market last week after experiencing a small contingency of backlash, primarily from its U.S. consumers. The ad was a part of its “In an Absolut World” campaign which invites consumers to imagine what their ideal reality would look like. This particular ad featured a map of the U.S.- Mexican border prior to the Mexican-American War and the annexation of Texas.

Absolut addressed its decision to run this ad on its blog* as follows, “In no way was this [ad] meant to offend or disparage, nor does it advocate an altering of borders, nor does it lend support to any anti-American sentiment, nor does it reflect immigration issues. Instead, it harkens to a time which the population of Mexico may feel was more ideal.”

Absolut vodka is the third largest brand of alcoholic spirits in the world, behind Bacardi and Smirnoff. It was introduced to the Swedish market in 1879 by Lars Olsson Smith. The Swedish government recently sold the company to the French firm, Pernard Ricard, in March of 2008.

If you are interested in sweden travel, the Absolut vodka headquarters is located in Åhus, Sweden and is a popular stop for our travelers. Picking up a rental car in Malmö, you can weave your way up the eastern Swedish coast towards Kalmar.

Åhus and the Absolut headquarters makes the lower tip a unique triangle of travel. To the northwest lies the enchanting Crystal Country, where visitors can try their hand at glass-blowing and learn how the famous Orrefors and Kosta Boda crystal is manufactured. A little farther north, sits Kalmar, a medieval city rich with castles and culture.

Our advice: If you intend to visit Crystal Country after your Absolut tour, be careful not to sample too much of the product. A crystal factory is the last place you want to be when you’re two sheets to the wind!
